Banks expect up to 5m low-income earners to register for welfare

The government Savings Bank, Krungthai Bank and the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives expect 3 million to 5 million low-income earners will sign up for state welfare when registration opens from tomorrow to August 15. Those eligible are Thai citizens aged 18 years and over, born before August 16, 1998, and earning not more than Bt100,000 a year or unemployed. Currently, there are about 10 million low-income earners on welfare, with 8 million receiving the allowance for the elderly and the rest other benefits from the government, Pornchai Theeravech, deputy director-general of the Finance Ministry’s Fiscal Policy Department, said on 13 July.
